When Satan Screws Up

Here’s the thing.  We all know that Satan is out to steal, kill, and destroy.  And that he tries to do that in all sorts of various ways.  To all of us who know Jesus are are obeying his commands.  Why?  Because we are a threat to him.

This past week, I feel that our family has been one of Satan’s targets.  There have been lots of incredible advances of the Gospel in our little town over the last two months and honestly? I think it’s pissing Satan off.

So he decided to go after our joy.  The week after having a newborn should be full of joy and warmth and cuddles, right?  And for the most part it has, but only because Neil and I have chosen to NOT LET SATAN STEAL OUR JOY.

When Corbin was six days old, we woke up to a loud crash outside our house.  Funny enough, we were both so tired that we woke up, asked each other what that might have been, and then went promptly back to sleep.  Until the loud incessant knocking and doorbell ringing started.  To which I woke up to cop car lights blinking.

The cop informed up that our van was totaled and was leaking the entire gas tank all over the street.  The fire department came to take care of the gas and we mourned the loss of our “new-to-us” mini van that we bought in anticipation for three kids.  The driver had smashed the van up against a concrete light pole.  We never even got to put them all in the car together.

But despite the plans that Satan may have had to make us upset and discouraged, we rejoiced that no one was seriously hurt.  We praised God that while the drunk driver even hit our second car, that it was only cosmetic damage.  And we trust that if we are meant to have a second vehicle (which really is just a luxury), that God will provide.

Being new to Michigan, we discovered in a really horrible way last year, that even if a car accident isn’t your fault, you are each responsible for your own car’s damage.  It’s called “no fault” insurance.  Really awful way to set up insurance plans, if you ask me.  I immediately just assumed that this would be the case again.  We still aren’t 100% sure, but have been informed that because our car was parked, it might be considered personal property damage and the driver’s insurance should cover the damage.  We are praising God for that!  And even if turns out not to be true, we are still thankful that no one was in the van when the driver came along.

And in another turn of crazy events, as just a shove in Satan’s face, the INTERNET came together to show love and care and thoughtfulness.  Someone on the Better Life Bag Facebook page started a fundraiser to help us cover the costs of a “new/used” mini van.  I was blown away.  Blown away, most of all, that someone would think to do that for me – for us!  Her email explained that she did it not because she thought we “needed” the money, but that she wanted to show me how many people across the Internet loved me and believed in the mission we were doing in Detroit.

So, thank you Internet.  Thank you for being a tool that we can use to fight against Satan’s schemes and screw up his plans.  I’m pretty sure that nothing went according to his plan and that God was glorified over and over as I shared what happened to the online world.  Take that Satan!

Also?  Satan loses in the VERY END, too.  What a hope and joy we have in knowing that.  He may be able to touch us and mess with us here on Earth, but that time is temporary (and we have the power in us to fight against and rebuke him).  I’m not even sure why he tries as I think he knows how it eventually will end, too.

Regardless of what happens with insurance coverage, you can rest assured that all the money donated will go toward either helping us replace our mini van OR in the case that the driver’s insurance will compensate us, I will give the money to another Better Life Bag employee who’s van was stolen a few weeks ago.  Claire uses this van to pick up handfuls of international women in our city who desire to learn English.  She stuffs them all in her van Monday – Thursday and takes them back to her house where she loves on them and has established a small ESL school for them.  Then she drops them off and runs into the BLB office to start her day of work.  Claire is being used by God, too – and Satan doesn’t like that, either.

Not sure why he is going after people with mini vans, but we aren’t about to let that stop us.  If you have extra funds, we would be so encouraged and delighted to be able to use them to replace one of our vehicles.  But regardless if you are able to give or not, please know how GOOD this Internet Community is.  And fight with us!

Yes, I am so thankful for the hope we have in Jesus. When we praise him in all circumstances, there is no telling what good can come. Thank you for the reminder, and for sharing your real life example. So thankful to call you friend.

Seriously…. if YOU are ever in an auto accident, having no fault insurance will take care of you. I am a social worker who works with auto accident victims who are severely injured. I wouldnt knock the no fault system.

AMEN!! Wow, what a crazy thing. And being from Michigan I’m aware of, and not a fan of, that no-fault policy!! We actually used to live just a little ways outside of Detroit. What are you doing there? We moved a couple of years ago to Florida to start a church, it’s been a long journey, and whew, a little tiring at times… especially because we just had our third, well seven months ago!

Oh, I so needed to read this. We are in the process of adopting our second child, this time from Uganda. I read somewhere at the beginning of the process that satan will begin to attack us as we work toward bringing our child home; boy was that person right! We’ve had a car die, crazy medical bills, and even two broken vacuums. I am rejoicing in the fact that satan WILL lose in the end.

I hope you are able to replace your van and praise God that no one was injured!!
